Touring Canada Week 8 - Gaspesie and Maritimes
Seeing the best of Gaspesie, passing through Prince Edward Island and ending the week easy to attempt the Cabot Trail loop! Solid week overall, just one day or rain and fully not sick anymore by the end.
3 rides in one today, totaling a nice 100km and 1800m of vertical. This day was one of the highlights of my trip so far.
So many vape shops everywhere now, all seemingly catering to 14 year olds.
I like to imagine a guy taking a harduous enough dump that necessitates holding onto that bar
Put some advertising on your town sign? I like it.
Town signs never complete without a little garden.
Touristy section of the town.
Grande Plage
Not the nicest beach. BUT I SAW IT. IT COUNTS.
Small learning area near the water. They have a historic cafe too.
I just want to buy something from this for some reason.
Gaspe harbor
This guy owns the coast apparently.
Perce is the prime tourist destination of Gaspesie. Whale tours, bird watching on Ile Bonaventure or trips to the Rocher Perce are on the menu. Back in town you’ll find the usual fare of little pubs, seafood, ice cream and souvenir shops.
Ile Bonaventure. It hosts a giant seabird colony if that's your thing.
The entire Perce region is built on cliffs, it's truly stunning.
So many gorgeous areas with these beat to hell shacks all over the place.
I know living here would be boring 95% of the time but it looks nice.
Painting houses in bright colors is a fun coastal trend. I'd change the color every year.
In BC this house would cost about 20 million. But here you get to drop a shack on any cliff you want!
Perce harbor, with the best view of the big rock without having to walk/boat there.
Woman and her rock.
One of my favourite pictures of this trip so far. Expect many more.
Bet your town doesn't have a rock like this.
A welcome change from the sasquatch statues of BC
How can this restaurant not be good?
Tourist shop. You need to be at least a level 2 shop to get a moose.
Top of Mont St-Anne. It's steep as hell, like 14% for a mile.
Artsy side with the macro
There's many high points in the region that offer stunning views of the island and the rock
Badlands style red rocks poking out of the cliffs
Another shot of the island
Whales wear the largest condoms
Great view as you're coming back into town from the south
This is the lookout on the 132 road as you get to Perce from the north
Jurassic Park stuff going on here.
Gray seals all the way at the bottom of the cliff.
Best view unless you take the helicopter tour.
Beautiful drive
Tourist part of town. "It stinks" remarked a passing 6 year old.
I did not know about Mont St-Joseph but it has to be Quebec’s hardest paved climb, going up 550m at 12-14% the entire time. Make sure your brakes work well or you’ll be tumbling all the way back down.
Did a little visit in town afterward. Just a nice quaint area with a large campground filled with RVs.
The lookout has a truly amazing view since the mountain is so steep.
That's what stuff looks like from 555m ( 1500feet) up.
There's a church on top. You really gotta need The Jesus to go there.
That's the mountain with the lookout in the background.
Sign you're in a nice place that's trying to keep the hobo infestation at bay.
Sometimes you wonder where towns get their art for parks. Like is it the mayor's cousin?
Saw a wild kitty that came to greet meet. No collar...
You can rent these and sleep in them? Or is it for fishing? No idea.
5$ for story hour of some sort at 8pm
That's the spot! I could have bummed free storytelling off these saps.
End of quite a long day. Wanted to just sit there and watch the sunset but still had to drive, shower, pack etc.... sigh
Had no idea what was in stores for me today. Never been here, never heard of this place. Was just a nice spot on the way where a bike loop could be made! Turns out this is a pretty cool area.
Can't understand how many dilapidated buildings of all sorts can be found in rural areas
What ruralness looks like
The ride then follows the Restigouche river
Bridge crossing from NB to Quebec
Railway bridge
View of Campbellton from the Quebec side. Don't think there's a road up that cliff...
You pass by the Ristigouche Battle historical site. Kind of sucks...
Yep, yep.
huhuhuhuhuhu
This is how you know you're on an Indian reserve in Canada. Casino, smokes and weed.
Bridge crossing from Quebec side and into Campbellton
Welcome to a new province!
The town has this pretty sweet fish fountain.
CBC reporters reporting a report.
The bridge from the boardwalk
Quite dope
Town hall. Notice the wind... this area is so damn windy...
Another Quebec dish. It's sort of a tourtiere but less dry and with the crust all on top. Better.
Was going to do a big loop around Moncton but the entire day was heavy rain. Almost went to the zoo before I remembered that most of a zoo is outdoors… Not paying to see a wet lion. Pffff.
First time ever on PEI! You get there by crossing the Confederation Bridge, which is 13 km long. Pretty impressive. It’s free to get to the island and then they charge 50$ per car to escape. Let’s open amusement parks that work on that model. All kids left unpaid for after 11pm are now property of the park. We only accept Canadian Tire dollars as toll payment to get out.
The world's largest lobster, in Shediac, right outside Moncton.
Shediac is a lobster themed town apparently.
A lighthouse themed Jesus House on PEI.
This is the large beach on the north shore. Didn't even have to pay to enter the park, awe yeah biking.
They have little grassy dunes too. Otherwise a somewhat unremarkable beach.
Little bit of marshlands along the park where you'll see blue herons
The entire island seems to sit on this bed of red clay. It's everywhere. The fields are planted in this clay.
The dirt roads are all red. Even the patches to repair the paved roads use this red stuff.
So apparently there's a "largest Strawberry" in North Carolina. But this one I randomly stumbled on is so much better.
Look at this embarrassment from North Carolina. Where's the heart? Where's the third dimension? Just burn it.
Town sign. I didn't stop to visit much because I was scared to miss the lobster supper...
Some leaves, whatever. The reviews for the lobster supper kept rambling about the long wait time....
A harbor yeah yeah. Look I didn't realize we skipped one hour ahead in the maritimes again. I need that god damned lobster, there's no time for this.
The promised land. 50$ all you can eat sides/desserts plus one lobster.
The size of the people confirms that it is indeed a buffet
Place is always packed in season apparently. Only waited 10-15mins but it gets way worse. Few hundred people can be there at once.
That's a good policy
What I ate. It was great. Just want to shove food in my mouth, don't care what it is anymore. Lobster was good but unless we can get them growing on trees soon, never worth the money...
A job well done for this fat little piggy. Back to guilt cycling
One of my old pals from Montreal, Evan, is playing shows on PEI this summer! I thought he was in Edmonton but this turned out great and we got to do a nice juicy ride with good ( but brutally windy ) weather. Couldn’t catch a show but pretty tempted to make the detour on the way back to see one and hang out more!
Point Prim lighthouse with Evan and Me! This is the oldest lighthouse on the Island
Apparently the sea is slowly eating into the island so one day this thing will be gone. You have mere decades to see it, hurry.
Lighthouses are a big theme around here and Nova Scotia. People build little lighthouse ornaments to put on their lawns and whatnot.
Typical PEI costal scene
The Woods Island lighthouse. They're all sort of the same at this point...
They have two for the price of one there
Stopped at this snack bar where the ferry from Nova Scotia lands.
Got a butter tart with ice cream. This one was good. Butter tart is supposedly a Canadian thing. They're really impossible to fuck up anyway
Harbor has these gross brown jellyfishes floating around. We don't need to throw trash in the ocean, it makes its own.
Saw a couple of these pink vehicles on the island.
I have now decided that this is their thing. Shit I should drive a cool car like that before I'm 90 like everyone I see with one of these around now...
Yeah apparently Nova Scotia also has a New Glasgow… Just did an easier ride with slower pace in preparation of attempting to smash myself on the Cabot Trail in two days. 300km with 4000m. Hope I can do it. Plan is to take the day off / easy taking the ferry to Newfoundland.
Sort of what this area looks like. Nothing too special.
That's the work factory Vincent Adultman is making works at
Honestly at this point he's not even fat, just average. They need to redesign him to be a 4D sphere
Osprey hanging out on a pole!
Tried to get closer and he flew away. Like, what do you think I'm going to do, bird? You're 30 feet up on a smooth pole.
Saw this school with a teepee. Wait... does that mean we're in...
Ah yes, an Indian reservation.
Pretty sweet school or town hall or whatever this was though.
I've been noticing this trend in Nova Scotia/ New Brunswick where parents put these on their yards for their kids.
Some free history for you
Here, have all the history you can take.
The city that never sleeps ( because it's illegal to sleep )
Ended the loop crossing back into town.
Has a little marina as well. Just seems like a nice quiet little town. It's near where the PEI ferry lands as well.
Wait why is food so cheap in Nova Scotia? What is going on? That's cheaper then the USA chickens. These are 10-12$ normally.
Was just looking to do an easy day to keep the engine warm. Ended up driving an extra hour trying to find parking for this little ride I had originally mapped then just kept driving and stopped to ride in Port Hawesbury instead.
What is this, New York City? Was the middle of nowhere
Drove 3km on washboard dirt garbage to get to this beach. Glad I didn't bike this loop.
View as you're crossing to Cape Breton into Port Hawsbury. Now that's a view worth biking too.
This bridge is sort of sketchy if you're biking, drivers not happy.
Get a taste of that coastline for tomorrow.
"Why is no one staying here?"
Town's little marina.
Puffins are a big thing around here, I've decided.
There's a canal that cuts through Canso Causeway and lets boats cut across without going around the whole cape
Spot where I slept that night. Nice wharf on the Bras D'or lake.
Guys living the retired boat/ranch life over there.
Perce is definitely a place you should visit once in your life in my opinion, very beautiful area to stop by for a few days. Not an extensive road network to bike though. Prince Edward Island is also much larger then I thought. Not a whole to check out and not the most epic scenery though. Nova Scotia from Moncton to Cape Breton, at least the North Shore, is pretty barren. Hopefully the road through Halifax is nicer!
Cape Breton tomorrow, then Newfoundland week!
